Constipation may occur due to several reasons or
the choices that people make in their daily lives, including lifestyle choices and the type of food they decide to consume, for some people the source of their
constipation is unknown to themselves or their doctors.
Let's look at some of the symptoms of
constipation;
- Having
hard or lumpy stools
- Less
than three stools per week
- Straining
to have movement in your bowel
- Feeling
not all stools have been emptied
- Feeling
pain or difficulty when releasing stool
Constipation can have a serious effect on your quality of life and can cause a substantial amount of stress and uneasiness in one's self.
There are several natural and medical ways to relieve yourself
from constipation and its effects, let's look at some of them;
I tell people that one of the very first ways to relieve yourself from constipation is by first checking your diet, you have to first stop and ask yourself what kind of food have you been consuming lately, if you think about it the only way you can get constipation is from foreign items that entered your stomach. Foods with less fiber and foods that don't digest quickly or digest at a slow pace.
Some of such foods include;
- Bread
- Banana
- Chips
- Chewing
gum
- Alcohol
- White
rice
There is a saying that "you are what you eat" and it applies here as well, just as it is important to reduce the intake of low fiber foods it is also very vital to nourish yourself with fruits and vegetables that contain enough fiber to aid your stomach in its digestive process.
Some
of such fruits and vegetables are;
- Orange
- Beans
- Mango
- Cabbage
- Avocado
- Brown
Rice
- Tiger
nuts
- Dairy
- Ginger
mix
There two (2) different types of fiber that can help the body to
reduce constipation, soluble fiber, and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fibers can
largely be found in vegetables and whole grains while soluble fibers on the other
hand are predominant in beans, nuts, lentils, peas, and other vegetables and
fruits.
There is a school of thought that suggests that regular exercise helps improve one's quality of life, this supports our mission of finding a solution to constipation because it helps improve one of the effects of constipation.
Exercises such as jogging and skipping rope, planks, elbow to
knee, running are few great examples that can help in stimulating the bowel to
ease the passing of stools. It may not be a scientifically proven way of
relieving constipation but one can try as it has helped other people as well.
It is important to note that exercise may not be ideal for
everybody especially those with underlying conditions that may make it difficult for them to exercise, I will
suggest soft exercises for such people, exercises like walking may help.
Sometimes your bowel may have difficulties in releasing stools due to it's current dry nature, dehydration has been proven to be one of the causes of constipation in current times.
Drinking more water can be very beneficial to your health, it keeps your body rehydrated and also keeps your bloodstream flowing smoothly. Waters with sparkle are said to be more effective in this situation than ordinary ones.
This does not include soda drinks or any beverage with or without sugar content. Hydrate more to keep the systems going and with time it may help relieve any hard or lumpy stools in your bowel.
Chronic constipation can also be attributed to low levels of probiotic bacteria in your guts, these are enzymes that help to stimulate the release of stools from the bowel.
The intake of probiotic foods can help correct the imbalance of bacteria within the bowel or gut, consuming more of it will relieve your body of constipation and correct any anomalies that may be going on in your digestive system.
Foods
that contain probiotics include;
- Yogurts
- Kimchi
- Miso
- Tempeh
- Kombucha
Most people are not aware but coffee can also be a natural remedy to relieve constipation. Believe it or not coffee contains some soluble fiber contents that can help correct the bacteria imbalance within the gut.
Studies have shown that caffeinated coffee is 60% more effective than drinking water and can stimulate the muscles in the digestive system.
Caffeinated coffee can be strong for people with underlying conditions and are advised to take it in moderation or take decaffeinated coffee.
If
you try any of these remedies outlined above and have still not experienced any
improvements or are still suffering from constipation, please try and contact
your doctor if you have one or visit the nearest hospital for consultation.
